Business directories provide a place for internet businesses to list their business and provide a collection of businesses in one place for consumers to search for a business that meets their needs.

Several things make a directory useful to those who list in it and those who access it for information.

This is what makes a directory good for the businesses that are listed in it:

  • Ease of submitting site
  • Affordability
  • Size of directory
  • Relevancy of traffic
  • Page rank
  • Drives traffic
  • Updated regularly
  • Deep linking option
  • Clear description
  • The "human" touch

Listing in several directories is ideal for optimal exposure. New directories have the benefit of lower number listings so it's easier to be noticed. Larger directories have more traffic and more category choices. It is important to a business be listed under a category that best matches the business.

This is what makes a directory good for the directory user:

  • A variety of categories
  • Several listings in each category
  • Requirements for business submitting to directory
  • Regular updates
  • The "human" touch
  • Listings are free of marketing hype
  • Site details are listed with URL
  • Directories are often more targeted to an individual search topic like businesses, paintballing, families, etc. There are directories for just about every topic.

There is a unique web directory called Strongest Brands that allows every business to submit. The submissions are individually assessed and either accepted or rejected. Some or the requirements of the Strongest Brands directory:

  • Submissions must be made to appropriate category
  • Business titles must include name, not just a list of keywords
  • Businesses have a description and allowed internal links in them
  • Descriptions must be free of marketing hype
  • Restricted to business sites
  • Pages must be functioning and not under construction
  • The requirements of this unique web directory make it appealing to directory users with guidelines to assure the directory is useful to its users. This directory allows the user to choose how to view the listings. The directory user has a choice of three different ways to view the listings:

    • Strength Rank
    • Popularity
    • Alphabetically

The strength rank is determined by link reciprocating and payment for submissions. Regular links are free of any charges. Payment can be made to increase strength rank. Once accepted for listing, the submitter can control how strong directory links are by how much is paid towards the submission or if there is a reciprocating link. The payment amount is at the discretion of the submitter. Payment (strength rank) can be contributed to at anytime the site is listed.

Listing descriptions can have up to three internal (deep) links. The descriptions can be as long as 100 words. Most listings will have enough information so that most users will have the information needed to decide which business site will meet their needs.

Directories benefit the businesses listed and the directory user to make sites available in an area of specific interest.
